Playa Mermejita is one of those beaches where you feel that people still appreciate and honor the nature of this special place. You feel the quiet rawness of the ocean and the sand, the salty wind, and the radiant sunshine kissing your skin. It feels expansive and nurturing at the same time. It’s feels at peace and you’re reminded that you are a guest in this place and nature is the host. You are at the love and mercy of the ocean. Here is Mazunte, the all powerful ocean rules all.
Playa Mermejita is located to the west of Punta Cometa and is about a 20-minute walk from town. The beach is a nice quiet alternative and offers a more remote, expansive stretch of beach to enjoy. The current is very very strong and it is not recommended for swimming. If you want to enjoy swimming, Playa Rinconcito and Playa Mazunte is your spot. People come here in the early mornings to run, dance, meditate, do beach yoga or any practice.
How to Get to Playa Mermejita
To get to Playa Mermejita, walk up Calle Mermejita off of Calle Rinconcito. You’ll see the road going up the hill at the corner of Cometa Cafe. Walk up the hill and follow the road and path straight all the way until you hit the beach. The walk is about 20 minutes from town. There are no vendors so be sure to pack provisions.
Sunset at Playa Mermejita
Check the time of sunset according to the day of the year. I would recommend arriving at least 30-45 minutes before to walk there and get settled. Sunsets in Mazunte are rituals and you will see people socializing, dancing, doing drum circles, and ceremonies. Oh and everyone claps when the sun sets —that is my favorite part :) Always different, no two sunsets are ever the same.
