Punta Cometa —also known as Cerro Sagrado —is an energetic vortex at the southernmost point of the Oaxacan coastline. This peninsula is located between Playa Rinconcito to the east and Playa Mermejita to the west. There are stories that this site was a hiding place for lost Aztec treasure. The site is now frequently used as a place for ceremony and to view the gorgeous sunrises and sunsets that bless each day.
The beauty of sunset watching at Punta Cometa is that it reminds you of the effortless theatrics of nature. Everyone gathers as if watching an evening show and nature always dazzles and delights every night. Each show different from the one before. And at the end people cheer and clap, and are left with hope renewed and full of gratitude for the next day to begin again.
Sunset at Punta Cometa
Check the time of sunset according to the day of the year. I recommend arriving at least 30-45-minutes before to walk the trail and get settled. As the southernmost point in all of Oaxaca, you will have a clear view of the sunset and they are quite dramatic! Always different, no two sunsets are ever the same. You might even be treated to a sighting of jumping dolphins and manta rays.
How to Get to Punta Cometa
To get to Punta Cometa, walk up Calle Mermejita off of Calle Rinconcito. You’ll see the road going up the hill at the corner of Cometa Cafe. Walk up the hill and you will see a sign on your left indicating the entry to the hiking trail to Punta Cometa. The walk is about 15-20 minutes from the town to the top. There is a suggested donation at the entry and a bag check.
How to Get to the Hidden Jacuzzi
When you arrive at the top of the peninsula, you will start making your descent to the end — be sure to stay on the trail to the very left until you can’t go anymore. You will see a curved rock outcropping with a view down below to the jacuzzi. There is a small rocky path behind you to your left that will wind down to the jacuzzi below. Do not be afraid as the the path looks a lot more dangerous than it is! However it does involve some more experienced hiking abilities and some rock scrambling :) Once you make it to the bottom you can hop in for a swim!
