Volcán de Pacaya, Guatemala

Chakras: Root, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Crown

Volcanoes are symbols of life. They can destroy and they can create. They are channels for the powerful and raw energy of the Earth. Harnessing and embodying all four elements of earth, air, water and fire, they are the true creators of the planet.

Volcán de Pacaya is one of the most active volcanoes in Central America. One that you can easily hike in half a day at 8,373 feet above sea level. It was formed roughly 23,000 years ago at the site of a lake. And for the past fifty years has been steadily erupting with daily activity and an average of one major eruption per year. The last major eruption was in April 2021 which lasted for three months.

Sightings of the magnificent Volcán de Fuego erupting

Despite the regular eruptions it is fairly safe to hike and offers beautiful views of the other two volcanoes and the valleys.

It gets a bit chilly up top and you might want to dress in layers + bring hiking poles as the terrain can be a bit rocky and there’s a possibility of sliding down the volcanic ash. The hike takes around 4 hours and is an out and back trail at 3.1 miles, with a 1500 feet elevation gain. Guides are required to hike and can be hired at the entrance of the park. I’ve seen people cook pizza and roast marshmallows from the heat of the volcano so feel free to come equipped!
